Yakusugi Land trekking guide

Yakusugi Land is a recreational forest with trekking trails. In this forest, you can see many majestic trees and plants such as the Yakusugi, the elegant Himeshara with its orange bark, and the colorful Yakushima azalea.

Although the name Yakusugi Land may give the impression of a theme park, it is actually a place where you can feel the nature of a primeval forest, with many giant Yakusugi trees. This is a recommended spot where you can enjoy Yakushima's majestic nature with your whole body, as there is a promenade for beginners in mountain climbing, so even families and those who are not confident in mountain climbing can enjoy it with peace of mind.

Yakusugi Land has five trekking courses, each with a different length of time. The duration is approximately 30 minutes, 50 minutes, 80 minutes, 150 minutes, and 210 minutes, and each course has a different charm. Both routes take different paths on the way out and back, so you can enjoy a variety of scenery.

Two short courses (30 minutes and 50 minutes) pass through old thousand-year-old cedars and beautiful twin cedar trees. These courses have roads paved with wood and stones, so even beginners can enjoy them with confidence.

the long course (more than 80 minutes) , you can get up close to magnificent Yakusugi trees, such as Hakosugi and Odasugi, which are estimated to be about 2,500 years old. These courses follow paths close to mountain trails, so they will tickle your sense of adventure.

A 150-minute trekking course for advanced climbers also allows you to climb Mt. Tachudake. At the summit of Mt. Tachudake, there is a majestic monolith that boasts a height of 40 meters, offering an even more impressive view.

Feel the history at Yakusugi Land

At Yakusugi Land, you can feel the deep relationship between the people of Yakushima and the forest. In particular, the stumps that can be seen throughout the area are remnants of logging during the Edo period (1603-1867). Many of the oldest trees in this area were saved from being felled because they were irregularly shaped, and they still remain today. At least nine Yakusugi trees that are over 1,000 years old are still standing today.

Remnants of logging

New cedars can also grow on the stumps of felled trees, a process called stump renewal. Twin cedar, which can be seen in Yakusugi Land, is an example of two young cedar trees of similar thickness growing on a single stump. The two trees are brought together by a natural phenomenon called cohesion. The tree on the left has a height of 22 meters and a circumference of 1.7 meters, and the tree on the right has a height of 22.7 meters and a circumference of 2.1 meters.

Because Twin Cedar is still thought to be about 150 years old, it is called Kosugi instead of Yakusugi, which is the name for cedar trees that are over 1000 years old.

Access to Yakusugi Land

Yakusugi Land can be accessed by rental car or bus.

How to go by bus

If you are taking a bus, there is no direct bus from Miyanoura Port, so you will have to change buses before heading there.
You can take the Yakushima Kotsu bus from the Miyanoura Port (first bus stop) near the hotel. There are buses that allow you to transfer to Yakusugi Land, one in the morning and one in the afternoon (twice a day), but if you go on the afternoon bus, there will be no return bus, so it is better to take the morning bus. I recommend moving.

The problem with returning from Yakusugi Land is that there are no buses at the right time. If it is a 30 or 50 minute trekking course, you may be able to make it back just in time, but if the course takes longer than that, you will not be able to board the bus. Therefore, when considering traveling by bus, you need to consider the time you will have to wait for the bus. If possible, we recommend traveling by rental car.

The return trip will be the same route.
